Calypso's Patent No. 6,680,923: How the Wireless Industry Should React
On January 20, 2004, Calypso Wireless, Inc. (OTC: CLYW) was granted U.S. Patent No. 6,680,923 (the “'923 Patent), entitled “Communication System and Method”. The ‘923 Patent covers the seamless roaming of voice, video and data between Wide Area Network access points and short-range Internet access points . According to David Davila, President & CEO of Calypso Wireless, the “patent dramatically enhances our business model…The patent will allow us to develop a Qualcomm type of a business model and start to aggressively pursue licensing agreements with established industry leaders and thereby growing revenues.” Calypso's share price, which, since June 2003, has historically traded between $1 to $2 per share, increased to over $5 per share and stabilized around $4 per share as of March 12, 2004.
Can Calypso successfully use the ‘923 Patent to generate royalty revenue or force the adoption of its technology for the seamless roaming of users between wide area networks and local IP networks?
Newbury Network's Patent No. 6,674,403: How the Wireless Industry Should React
On January 6, 2004, Newbury Networks, Inc. was granted U.S. Patent No. 6,674,403 (the "'403 Patent), entitled "Position Detection and Location Tracking in a Wireless Network". The '403 Patent "detects the real-time position and tracks the location of any 802.11 device over a wireless LAN (WLAN)." (Newbury press release, dated February 24, 2004). According to Michael Maggio, President & CEO of Newbury Networks, the "patent further validates Newbury's position in the wireless networking space as the technology leader for location-based monitoring and security.By leveraging our now patented core technology, we will continue to improve and enhance our ground-breaking product offerings."
Can Newbury Networks successfully use the '403 Patent to generate royalty revenue or build market share for real-time position detection and location tracking of any 802.11 device over a wireless LAN?
